My First Orchid
by Bob Schwartz
This is my first orchid, a small but exquisite one I got as a gift. It offers beauty for very little care. I water it once a week and it decorates the room and my life.
But I just learned there is more to it than that. It has been gently dropping petals. When it stops flowering, I am told, it should go to a dark place to hibernate. After a while, it will be taken out to wake up and start its beauty regimen again. If it doesn’t sleep, it will grow as a plant but will not flower.
It hasn’t been here long, but I will miss it.
A beautiful image – Beautiful flower! Hope it comes back to you soon :)
I never knew they needed to be in the dark after the flowers drop. When mine lost its petals I was told to just cut back the stems, and continue to water the healthy leaves, then it bloomed again for the next season!
Well, I am one who loves plants, flowers, vegetable and trees, but depends on those who know how to successfully grow all of them for advice. Anyway, the idea of the sleeping beauty appealed to me. So glad you liked the flower and the photo.
