Think (IBM). Think different (Apple). Think for yourself (me).
by Bob Schwartz

Long before AI and the “thinking machines” that preceded it, others wanted to do our thinking for us.
It has always been important to consider what others, people or machines, are offering to think, and to make considered use when it is good and beneficial or to think otherwise for ourselves when it is not.
When we lose the will and power to think for ourselves, we may be lost. When IBM or Apple or the now thousands of others are telling us what to think, how to think and offering to do the thinking for us, we may be lost.
We are not lost when we learn to think for ourselves. Think for yourself.
Think Magazine was published by IBM from 1935-1970. When I was in high school in the 1960s, it was something my nerd-self looked forward to receiving.
More nerds!
I was going include a little about both the IBM “Think” and the Apple “Think different”. Since you mention the IBM THINK magazine, here is something about the origin of the slogan. A biography of Thomas J. Watson, founder of IBM, reports:
The “THINK” slogan was first used by Thomas J. Watson in December 1911, while managing the sales and advertising departments at the National Cash Register Company. At an uninspiring sales meeting, Watson interrupted, saying “The trouble with every one of us is that we don’t think enough. We don’t get paid for working with our feet – we get paid for working with our heads”. Watson then wrote THINK on the easel.
