We are passersby (says Jesus) and tourists (says the Dalai Lama)

Whenever we can connect the Dalai Lama and Jesus, we know we are in the right place.

The Gospel of Thomas, sometimes called the Fifth Gospel, is a collection of sayings of Jesus that parallel and supplement the canonical gospels.

It contains this short and simple direction:

  1. Be passersby

This enigmatic saying for me has the depth of any words in scripture.

Today I came across related wisdom from the Dalai Lama, who makes the same point. Just as Jesus is not offering a limited Christian perspective, the Dalai Lama is not offering a limited Buddhist perspective. It is a fact of human life.

Here the Dalai Lama comments on verses from Shantideva’s The Way of the Bodhisattva.


We are all here on this planet, as it were, as tourists. None of us can live here forever. The longest we might live is a hundred years. So while we are here we should try to have a good heart and to make something positive and useful of our lives. Whether we live just a few years or a whole century, it would be truly regrettable and sad if we were to spend that time aggravating the problems that afflict other people, animals, and the environment. The most important thing is to be a good human being.

Note: By coincidence—or is it?—this was created spontaneously today on the 90th birthday of the Dalai Lama.

Jesus says: Be passersby

The Gospel of Thomas is a record of the sayings of Jesus. It is a Coptic text, discovered in the twentieth century, and generally regarded as authentic as the sayings included in the synoptic gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke. A number of the sayings in Thomas have parallels with sayings in those canonical gospels, though many of sayings in Thomas appear nowhere else. The Gospel of Thomas is sometimes referred to as the fifth gospel.

Professor Marvin Meyer was acknowledged as expert on Thomas, along with expertise on other so-called gnostic gospels. (See The Gnostic Bible edited by Willis Barnstone and Marvin Meyer.) The following is from his translation and commentary on one of the deepest and most enigmatic of the sayings. (Note: The numbering is a scholarly convention not in the text.)

Be passersby.*

This is not only the shortest saying attributed to Jesus, but one of the shortest attributed to any wisdom master. Yet it is open to so much meaning. To begin with, ‘passersby” or “wanderers” might mean different things. And if it is “passersby”, as in the Muslim inscription on that mosque, a bridge is only one way to understand this.

Whether we are advised by Jesus, in just two words, to be passersby or wanderers, how exactly are we to be?

Some simple books to know

I worked to find a fitting title for this post. I know what I want to include or not include, but I don’t know how to digest that into a description. So I settled on “Some simple books to know” without explaining what I mean by “simple”. Maybe you’ll figure it out.

Anyway, this is a list, without much else. All are found in multiple English translations and commentaries, which I need, and maybe you need, since I am not capable in Pali, Chinese, biblical Hebrew, or Coptic.

At some later time, I hope to detail each of these books individually, and why it is essential to read and study different translations and commentaries. For now, just peruse the list, investigate if you like.


Dhammapada

There are millions of words attributed to the Buddha, written about the Buddha and Buddhism. This is the most concise collection of the Buddha’s sayings. It is the first book I ever read about Buddhism, and there is no time, all these books later, I do not turn to it.

Tao Te Ching

The foundational text of Taoism. Lao Tzu was likely not a real person. This wisdom is simple, compelling, everlasting, and very real.

Chuang Tzu (the title of the text and the name of the person)

Chuang Tzu was more likely than Lao Tzu to have been a real person, though words attributed to him are likely not all his. Doesn’t matter. Few figures in wisdom history are as earnestly wild and fun as this guy. His reach among contemporary creators and thinkers is extensive. If any work on this list can be described as mind-blowing, he/this is it. (He is the originator of the well-known story in which he wakes up not knowing whether he is a man who dreamt he was a butterfly or a butterfly who dreamt he was a man.)

Book of Job

One of the truly transgressive books of the Hebrew Bible. If read as “God knows best and who are you to question. Trust Me.”, which is what the added coda and much teaching indicate, it is piously conforming. If read as “this is a mystery, none of us knows what is going on, and things do get bad and good fast (in other words, WTF!)” you are closer to a truth.

Ecclesiastes/Kohelet

The first mystery of Kohelet is how it ever ended up in the Hebrew Bible, given that it reflects so much human agency and freedom in the face of an everchanging impermanent life and world, a world where everything is wind and vapor (a better translation of hevel, which in the KJV is “vanity”). Kohelet is not a license to do whatever you want because we are all going to die anyway. It is a navigational guide to days, seasons and years that are seemingly orderly but actually chaotic, even absurd. It’s a wonderful life.

Gospel of Thomas

The Gospel of Thomas is sometimes referred to as the Fifth Gospel. As with the words of Jesus in the other four, scholars have worked tirelessly to determine as best as possible which are actually his and which are added in the spirit of his teaching. Thomas is entirely sayings, no narrative, some of which ended up in the other gospels, some of which are found only in this text. Among the sayings, the one that for me stands above all is this: “Be [or become] passersby.” (Saying 42) If you know that, you know (almost) everything.

The Gospel of Thomas

The Gospel of Thomas—sometimes referred to as the Fifth Gospel—is one of a number of ancient texts about the life and words of Jesus that did not become part of the New Testament canon. Many of these, including Thomas, can be found in Marvin Meyer’s volume The Gnostic Gospels of Jesus: The Definitive Collection of Mystical Gospels and Secret Books about Jesus of Nazareth. Meyer, a brilliant scholar and translator who was an eminent expert on these gospels, explains:

The Gospel according to Thomas is an ancient collection of sayings of Jesus said to have been recorded by Judas Thomas the Twin. Unlike other early Christian gospels, which typically consist of narrative accounts interpreting the life of Jesus of Nazareth and culminating in descriptions of his death, the Gospel of Thomas focuses specifically upon sayings of Jesus. The document claims that these sayings themselves, when properly understood, communicate salvation and life: “Whoever discovers the interpretation of these sayings will not taste death” (saying 1).

The Coptic text of the Gospel of Thomas came to light with the discovery of the Nag Hammadi library, within which the Gospel of Thomas is to be found as the second tractate, or document, of Codex II. According to Muhammad Ali of the al-Samman clan, who has told his story to James M. Robinson, this remarkable manuscript discovery took place around December 1945….

As a gospel of wisdom, the Gospel of Thomas proclaims a distinctive message. In contrast to the way in which he is portrayed in other gospels, particularly New Testament gospels, Jesus in the Gospel of Thomas performs no physical miracles, reveals no fulfillment of prophecy, announces no apocalyptic kingdom about to disrupt the world order, and dies for no one’s sins. Instead, Thomas’s Jesus dispenses insight from the bubbling spring of wisdom (saying 13), discounts the value of prophecy and its fulfillment (saying 52), critiques end-of-the-world, apocalyptic announcements (sayings 51, 113), and offers a way of salvation through an encounter with the sayings of “the living Jesus.”

The readers of the Gospel of Thomas are invited to join the quest for meaning in life by interpreting the oftentimes cryptic and enigmatic “hidden sayings” of Jesus. They are encouraged to read or hear the sayings, interact with them, and discover for themselves the interpretation and meaning. Saying 2 describes the vicissitudes of such a quest for insight: “Jesus said, ‘Let one who seeks not stop seeking until one finds. When one finds, one will be troubled. When one is troubled, one will marvel and will reign over all’”. That is to say, the quest for meaning is to be undertaken with commitment; and while the way taken may be upsetting, people will attain insight and rest if only they persevere. For it is in the quest and through the quest that people find themselves and God. Then, according to the Gospel of Thomas, they discover that God’s kingdom is not only outside them but also inside them, that they are “children of the living father” (saying 3), and that they are essentially one with the savior. Saying 108 makes this point by using mystical language: “Jesus said, ‘Whoever drinks from my mouth will become like me; I myself shall become that person, and the hidden things will be revealed to that person.’”

Following are a few of the sayings; spiritual explorers are urged to find and read them all. Some sayings will seem familiar, sounding much like famous sayings found in the canonical gospels. Others will be new, obscure and mysterious—as they are meant to be.

Blessings on the lion if a human eats it,

Foul is the human if a lion eats it,

[Meyer’s note: This obscure saying seems to appeal to the lion as a symbol of all that is passionate and bestial: the passions may either be consumed by a person or consume a person.]

Tell us how our end will be.

Yeshua said,
Have you discovered the beginning and now are seeking the end?
Where the beginning is, the end will be.
Blessings on you who stand at the beginning.
You will know the end and not taste death.

When you take the beam out of your own eye,

Easter

Gnostic Bible

I am not a Christian, not in any conventional or even unconventional sense. But I have been a student of Christian religion, literature and phenomena for decades. It is part of a religious triangle—or maybe universe—with my native Judaism and my adopted Buddhism.

One of my earliest Christian experiences was reading the Gospel of Thomas, part of the Nag Hammadi Library, a trove of early Christian writings discovered in 1945. That translation of one of the so-called Gnostic Gospels was done by Dr. Marvin Meyer; I did not know that years later I would work with and become friends with him. What I did know on first reading (and on first meeting) was that the late Dr. Meyer was brilliant. (You may well have seen him on many of the History and Discovery Channel type biblical shows.)

For this Easter, I include a selection from the Gospel of Thomas. It is taken from The Gnostic Bible, edited by Dr. Meyer and by the equally-brilliant poet, translator and scholar Willis Barnstone.

The Gospel of Thomas, often called the Fifth Gospel, is a work of sayings and wisdom; there is no action. Some of the sayings are similar to those that appear in the canonical gospels. Others are more assertively cryptic and mysterious, puzzling in the same way that Zen koans are. This section, appropriately for Easter, is about life and death:

Yeshua (Jesus) said,
This heaven will pass away
and the one above it will pass away.
The dead are not alive
and the living will not die.
During the days when you ate what is dead
you made it alive.
When you are in the light, what will you do?
On the day when you were one
you became two.
But when you become two, what will you do?

Willis Barnstone’s most recent work is The Restored New Testament, a monumental achievement in which he single-handedly translated the entire NT (including Gnostic Gospels) and provided hundreds of pages of lucid and enlightening commentary. In that book, he offers this wisdom for a modern age:

In the end, all people are people, and no people should ever be classified for whatever reason as less than another. Any marker of sect and theology that distinguishes any people adversely is human and humane error. So the gospels and Apocalypse should not be seen for the momentary and external conflicts they may contain, but rather for their greater universality of spirit in a world desperately poor in coming to terms with human consciousness within the perishable body. Happily, the call to spirit is deep and needs no name, and no divisive emblem. The New Testament is a book of the mind; it is infused with compassion and courage and the great questions of being, death, time, and eternity. For the perceptive reader, spirit eludes name, dogma, and even word to reside in the silence of transcendence.
